The Pipa Ecological Sanctuary is one of the last continuous stretches of Atlantic Forest on the Rio Grande do Norte coast: around 90 hectares of forest, easy trails, lookouts over dolphins and turtles, and direct access to Madeiro Beach. This guide gathers price, hours, trails and how to get there, plus the difference between visiting on your own and with a local biologist.

The Pipa Ecological Sanctuary is a reserve of approximately 90 hectares of Atlantic Forest in the heart of Tibau do Sul, on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. With easy trails through one of the last preserved strips of coastal forest in the Northeast, lookouts over dolphins and sea turtles, and direct access to Madeiro Beach, it is one of the most sought-after spots for anyone visiting Pipa Beach.

This guide brings together up-to-date information on price, hours, trails and how to get there, and explains the difference between visiting on your own and going with local biologists who study this ecosystem closely.

Two ways to explore the Ecological Sanctuary

On your own. Admission is bought at the Sanctuary ticket office. The trails are signposted and you walk the park at your own pace. It works well for quick walks and for those already familiar with trails in natural areas.

Immersion with a local biologist. The Guided Immersion in the Ecological Sanctuary, by Pipa Local Trips, leaves from Pipa with transport included and is led by biologists who follow this ecosystem closely. Each trail gains a layer the solo visit does not offer: the names of the species that cross the path, the ecological role of the animals, the signs that go unnoticed without guidance. It is the difference between walking a trail and understanding what it tells.

Trails and lookouts of the Sanctuary

The Sanctuary has about 12 signposted trails, 150 to 600 meters long and with difficulty levels from 1 to 5. Most of the routes are easy, with packed-earth ground and constant shade under the Atlantic Forest canopy. It is the kind of walk that works for families with children and for those who do not often do harder trails.

The most popular spots are the Dolphin Lookout, with an elevated view over the bay where dolphins feed close to the shore, and the Turtle Lookout, facing Madeiro Beach, a nesting area monitored by the Tamar Project. A stairway of about 150 steps connects the top of the cliffs to the beach, with a panoramic view along the whole way.

On a visit on your own, the lookouts and shorter trails usually take 1 to 2 hours. On the immersion with local biologists, the route gains another dimension: each stop reveals what the sign does not tell. The silence before a troop of marmosets appears among the trees, the explanation of why that tree species only exists on this strip of coast, the exact moment the dolphins tend to approach the shore. These are layers that turn a walk into something the visitor takes home.

What the Sanctuary means for Pipa

The Ecological Sanctuary is one of the last continuous areas of coastal Atlantic Forest in Rio Grande do Norte. Preserving this stretch of forest protects springs, keeps the cliffs stable and sustains ecological corridors for species that do not survive outside the forest, such as the marmoset and the toucan.

For the community of Pipa and Tibau do Sul, the Sanctuary also works as a reference for tourism that generates income without degrading. When visits are guided by people who understand the ecosystem, the impact on the trails goes down and the financial return is shared among local professionals. It is a model where tourism and preservation go together, not as a speech, but as everyday practice.
